The heartbreaking incident occurred in February 2023 at Spanish Lakes Fairways, a retirement community in Florida. Gloria Serge, an 85-year-old grandmother, had been walking her small dog near a lake when an approximately 11-foot alligator suddenly attacked. According to reports, the predator initially lunged toward Trooper, her Shih Tzu. The dog escaped, but Gloria was caught by the alligator and pulled into the water. What began as a peaceful moment outdoors turned into a desperate struggle that unfolded in front of her neighbor, Carol Thomas.

Carol immediately tried to help her friend. Seeing an overturned paddle boat nearby, she urged Gloria to swim toward it, hoping it might provide something to hold onto. But Gloria was unable to free herself. According to Carol’s account, the grandmother cried out, “The gator has me!” Those four words became one of the most heartbreaking details of the tragedy. Carol reportedly grabbed a metal pole and attempted to strike the animal, desperately trying to interrupt the attack. Despite her efforts, she could not rescue Gloria. The encounter happened so quickly that there was little opportunity for anyone nearby to intervene.

Emergency responders and wildlife officials were called to the scene, but Gloria did not survive. Authorities subsequently captured and euthanized the alligator involved in the attack. Remarkably, Trooper survived without injury. For Gloria’s family, however, the dog’s survival brought only limited comfort amid an unimaginable loss. Her son later spoke about the overwhelming grief of knowing what his mother had endured. Carol also struggled with memories of the incident, reportedly questioning whether there was anything more she could have done to save her friend.

The tragedy drew widespread attention and renewed discussion about safety around lakes and waterways in areas where alligators live. Wildlife authorities advise people to keep themselves and their pets away from the water’s edge when alligators may be present, never feed wild alligators, and avoid approaching them. Dogs can attract the attention of these predators, making extra caution especially important during walks near freshwater habitats. Gloria’s story remains a devastating reminder that even familiar surroundings can contain unexpected dangers. Above all, it is the story of a grandmother whose ordinary morning ended in tragedy and a friend who desperately tried to save her.
